Build and Commission with Confidence — Even in Winter As temperatures drop,
hydronic projects don't stop — but they do demand different precautions. Whether
you are installing PEX in an unheated building, commissioning a radiant system
before the heating season, or protecting existing circuits from freezing, these
practices keep projects on schedule and systems reliable.
1. Installing PEX in Cold Conditions PEX pipe remains
flexible and impact-resistant at sub-zero temperatures, which makes cold-weather
installation practical — unlike rigid metal or some brittle plastics. Practical
precautions:
Store coils in a protected, non-freezing area until installation;
Uncoil gently and allow the pipe to warm slightly before making tight
bends;
Never use hammers or impact tools directly on compressed pipe in freezing
conditions.
2. Use Cold Expansion Connections for Cleaner Winter Work Ritable's Easy Expansion system creates joints mechanically — no soldering, no

dependence on outdoor temperatures.
3. Protect Circuits Before and After Commissioning
Before commissioning: DO NOT leave a water-filled system unheated in
freezing conditions. If the building is unoccupied and unheated, fill circuits
with an antifreeze/glycol mix or maintain safe minimum temperature.
Drain-down circuits that will stay inactive: open low points, use
compressed air to expel residual water, and leave manifold valves open.
Insulate exposed runs in unheated spaces (garages, crawl spaces, plant
rooms) — especially supply and return lines.
4. Commissioning Before the Heating Season
Pressure-test all circuits (typically 1.5× working pressure) and record
results;
Flush circuits thoroughly to remove debris before connecting manifolds and
controls;
Start the system gradually: raise supply temperature step-by-step over
several days to protect the screed and avoid thermal shock.
5. Match the Pipe to the Season's Demands
