Heating gets the attention. Domestic water decides the complaints. In a
hotel, hospital or apartment tower, the heating circuit runs for part of the
year. The domestic water system runs every day, all day, at mains pressure. Yet
specification effort usually flows the other way. This guide covers what
actually determines performance in potable and sanitary water systems.
1. Why water is a harsher environment than heating Heating water circulates
in a closed loop: the same water, chemically treated, with oxygen consumed once
and then excluded. Domestic water is continuously replaced. New water brings new
oxygen, new dissolved minerals and new opportunity for scale and biofilm. Any
metal component in the chain — fittings, pumps, valves — becomes a corrosion
site. Material choice matters more here than in heating, not less.

Practically, that means the flow rate you commission with is close to the flow

4. Design points that decide real-world performance
Avoid dead legs. Long stagnant branches are where water quality problems
begin. Keep runs direct.
Balance hot water circulation. An unbalanced return loop gives some outlets
instant hot water and others a long wait — and wastes energy on
over-circulation.
Insulate hot runs and any pipe in unheated spaces.
Support and protect long horizontal runs; PEX is flexible, which is an
advantage until it is unsupported.
Pressure-test and record before closing walls. Documentation is what
protects both the installer and the client.

Water systems are judged years later, when nobody remembers what was
